Project Spotlight: El Camino Replacement Hospital Structured Cabling

When the time came for El Camino Hospital to build a new $500 Million state-of-the-art hospital and move out of their older facility which did not meet California’s new stringent seismic standards, Cal Coast Telecom answered the call.

Operating under highly restrictive OSHPD standards, every iota of the work product for each trade was scrutinized with multiple inspections. Upgraded mounting hardware and practices for seismic bracing, tight construction schedules, and staged work phases made this 5-story, 3-wing building a challenge of its own. However, while the GC had all the subcontractors working under their contract, the Owner chose to go direct for their Telecom contract to maintain tight control over the quality of the network installation. Working as a third party, Cal Coast Telecom interleaved with the install crews, reported in to both the General and Owner, and still helped El Camino Hospital to finish the project on time, under budget, and with a zero problem impact to either the GC or owner.

The Telecom portion included over 210 miles of CAT5e+ cabling and 11,000 data ports, 250 miles of fiber, and almost 4 miles of woven innerduct and 25-pair cabling to 28 IDF rooms. Another 2300 strands of fiber, 1000 pairs of copper, and 10 new Zone 4 OSHPD cabinets with custom-fabricated air dam panels and wire managers were installed in a new redundant MPOE facility to bridge to the existing Data Center. In addition,

Cal Coast Telecom was chartered to design and implement a TV-over-UTP system that would distribute the Hospital’s TV signals from their new head-end to the new and existing campus buildings using existing fiber backbone and CAT5e+ horizontal cabling and supplementing additional backbone cable as needed, eliminating the need to install new coax to the patient rooms and waiting room lobbies.

Cal Coast Telecom worked closely with the Telecom engineer from start to finish, reviewing the IDF coverage across the floor relative to original and added drops. Each cable as well as faceplate location was independently tracked and numbered, and detailed patch panel and station schedules in Excel and AutoCAD were maintained, providing 100% error-free test results and a continuing record of available capacity and cable sequence numbers for ongoing MAC work. Structural engineering drawings and approvals were prepared for telecom structures ahead of time, and complete CAD documentation and a lifetime manufacturer warranty was provided upon completion of the project.

At its sustained peak periods, the project employed some 16 full-time installation personnel, with multiple work crews and shifts. No injuries were recorded on this 18-month project. Cal Coast Telecom is a proud member of IBEW 332, and honored to count El Camino Hospital as one of its most valuable clients.
